While I so love being a boy Mom, I embrace being one of the aunts of three lovely young ladies, and I prize my unique connection with each one. The eldest and I believe in maintaining a tight knit yet diverse inner circle. The second in line is intuitive and a natural helper yet given to introspection. The youngest and I share a true artsy nature.
It is in fact the latter niece who reached out to me last year during the heat of the pandemic, presenting the idea of me creating a line of what she referred to as crumb or naked cakes. She felt their presentation matches the vision of Sea Coast Island Cakes being "rustic in design" and would allow for further floral expression. (Funny how kids have such incredible insight). From there I became fascinated! Low and behold at the start of the school year, a sweet colleague emailed me asking if I'd consider baking her wedding cake. She specifically requested a naked cake which she felt would be most appropriate for her given venue.
While I was initially quite hesitant, I love a good, constructive challenge and humbly accepted. I prayed and paced myself in researching and practicing. At times I felt overwhelmed, and even a bit inadequate. Yet, over time I found the most solace in keeping in mind that my niece also mentioned that the beauty of these cakes is that they're "perfectly imperfect."
In allowing myself to become vunerable yet in tune with my craft, the more it seems that creativity flowed from above, along with the support of a couple of amazing baking buddies and family and friends.
Life has a way of challenging us in the most unexpected ways. Rather than shrinking, may we each be encouraged to allow our inner creativity to simply flow.
